What is a Master of Ceremonies?

A Master of Ceremonies is a professional individual who specialises in hosting Wedding receptions or staged events. The Master of Ceremonies is there to lead the Wedding throughout the day, usually with a microphone. They usually will take charge in announcing the Bride & Groom or helping to guide guests in the right direction. The Master of Ceremonies is there to ensure a smooth & timely running of the day, while at the same time, making sure that everyone is enjoying themselves and having a good time. Having a Master of Ceremonies is also a great way of keeping the atmosphere and spirit alive during a Wedding, they will create a special bond and interaction between the guests and the Master of Ceremonies.

The duty of a Master of Ceremonies is usually during the reception of the Wedding and will generally have no involvement with the actual Ceremony. Their main duties are to ensure that the guests are aware of what there is to come throughout the day and to make sure that they are all in the correct place at the right time. If there is a professional photographer there, a Master of Ceremonies will need to ensure that the correct photos are being taken of the guests, and at the right time. Despite the fact that Master of Ceremonies were created by the Catholic Church which was founded back in the 5th Century, a Master of Ceremonies is neither religious or non-religious, so you can book a Master of Ceremonies even if you were unsure of the type of Wedding style or tradition you might have. A Master of Ceremonies can also perform at any Wedding, whether it be a Christian Wedding, Indian Wedding, Humanist Wedding etc.

Master of Ceremonies

A Master of Ceremonies is a trained person who performs and hosts formal Weddings or events after the ceremony has taken place. Master of Ceremonies are not bound by religious conventions or the rites of any religion. Usually the Master of Ceremonies will have no involvement with the ceremony itself and will not generally include any religion in anyway. They are there to ensure that the guests are informed about the structure for the day and they are there to make sure that everyone is having fun and interacting with each other.

Are Master of Ceremonies Trained?

There are no official training courses or qualifications needed to become a Master of Ceremonies, they will only need to bring a good stage presence and to ensure that they are comfortable talking in front of large groups of people at a Wedding. However, there are of course, courses which Master of Ceremonies can take to become a more trained & well practiced Master of Ceremonies. Some Weddings can also choose close friends or family members to host their Wedding as a Master of Ceremonies, which can sometimes feel more personal and bespoke as the couple will know them personally. Not only do Master of Ceremonies conduct Weddings, but they will be able to host a number of other ceremonies, parties or staged events which will involve large groups of people.

Master of Ceremonies – The Reception

You will usually first see the Master of Ceremonies after the ceremony has been conducted and the Bride & Groom have officially become partners through marriage. As for the Master of Ceremonies, their first duty is to ensure that the guests know where to go and who will need taking photos during the drinks reception (usually close family & friends). The Master of Ceremonies will also need to guide the guests for their food once the photos have been taken, and they will also be in charge of announcing the newlyweds. Once the food and drinks have been served, the Master of Ceremonies will announce to the guests the next stage of the Wedding, which is usually tea & coffee. The Master of Ceremonies will also need to make sure that they announce the first dance, cake cutting and any other activities which are planned for the evening (i.e band, DJ, photo booth etc).
